HAND-MADE OBJECTS
2012 - 2013
These VOMs are the originators of the eventual EMERALD, RUBY, and AQUEOUS hand-polished, crystal clear cast resin VOMs.
This series evolved in the technical process of mastering materials, such as in the steps of:
1) sculpting the original objects (positive form) in clay;
2) casting a one-piece mold of plaster and burlap (negative form), then wet-sanding the mold;
3) casting a positive form of plaster and burlap in the previously mentioned mold;
4) destroying the mold to release the object;
5) wet-sanding the positive plaster form;
6) casting 2- and 3-part plaster molds (negative), then wet sanding their interiors;
7) pouring liquid clay earthenware (slipcasting) into the plaster molds. The plaster of the mold draws out moisture from the clay, which, after at least one hour, allows for layers of the clay to build up a skin along the plaster mold. The liquid clay is poured out and hollow positive form remains;
8) allowing the slipcast object to dry for weeks; firing; then sanding the surface;
9) mixing glazes and applying, with a spray gun, the glazes evenly onto the objects;
10) firing the glazed objects for a second time.
