On the occasion of the 25th/ 50th anniversary of the Flemish Parliament in 2021, six contemporary artists were invited to create a work of art, under the theme of 'the democratic system in the broadest sense of the word.’ Featured artists include, Caroline Coolen, Marie Cloquet, Tramaine de Senna, Klaas Rommelaere, Yonas Seyoum, and Kato Six.

The works will be on view through July 10th. Though the parliament is not open to the public, guided tours of the works will be available on June 25 and July 2.

"Celebration"

Celebration is een tweeledig kunstwerk dat bestaat uit een monumentaal textielwerk en een keramisch beeldhouwwerk. Het motief van de vogel en de bloem zijn ontleend aan historische schilderijen en speelt anderzijds in op de traditie van de heraldiek. 

Het motief van de gestileerde roos is geïnspireerd op het wapenschild van de stad Antwerpen. De ranke, exotische vogel komt voor in een fantasievoorstelling van het ‘Aards Paradijs’ van Jan Bruegel de Oude en Pieter-Paul Rubens. Die interesse voor het exotische werd toentertijd gevoed door de grote ontdekkingsreizen en werd zodoende een genre waarin feit en fantasie met elkaar verstrengeld raakten. Dit sluit aan bij het onderzoek van Tramaine de Senna naar het ontstaan, de ontwikkeling, de gebruiken en de gewoonten van personen, bevolkingsgroepen, instellingen en landen. 

Tegelijk wijst deze beeldvorming voor de kunstenares op het belang van de Antwerpse haven als internationaal knooppunt. Sinds de zestiende eeuw is het een hotspot in de wereldwijde trafiek van goederen en een motor van globale culturele uitwisselingen. Die in- en uitvoer van goederen en gedachten biedt de mogelijkheid om zichzelf steeds terug uit te vinden en in te spelen op de nieuwe uitdagingen van de wereld. In het oeuvre van de kunstenares vertaalt zich dat in het wisselend gebruik van materialen en de variatie van esthetische vormen. 

Tramaine de Senna is afkomstig uit Californië en woont en werkt sinds 2015 in Antwerpen.

TRAMAINE DE SENNA

"Celebration"

Celebration is a two-part work of art consisting of a monumental textile work and a ceramic sculpture. The motif of the bird and the flower is taken from historical paintings and, on the other hand, responds to the tradition of the heraldry. 

The motif of the stylized rose is inspired by the coat of arms of the city of Antwerp. The slender, exotic bird appears in a fantasy representation of the 'Earthly Paradise' by Jan Bruegel the Elder and Pieter-Paul Rubens. That interest for the exotic was then fed by the great voyages of discovery and thus became a genre in which fact and fantasy became entwined. This ties in with the Tramaine de Senna's research into the origin, the development, customs and habits of persons, populations, institutions and countries. 

At the same time, this image for the artist points to the importance of the port of Antwerp as an international hub. Since the sixteenth century it has been a hotspot in the worldwide traffic of goods and an engine of global cultural exchanges. The import and export of goods and thoughts offers the possibility to constantly reinvent itself and to respond to the new challenges of the world. In the oeuvre of the artist, this translates into the varying use of materials and variation of aesthetic forms. 

Tramaine de Senna is from California and lives and has been working in Antwerp since 2015.
