MHKA'S IN SITU:Tramaine de Senna - MASTERBLASTER
18 January - 23 August 2020The Flemish Minister of Culture, the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors, and the M HKA team have the honour of inviting you to the opening of MASTERBLASTER, an exhibition by Tramaine de Senna.
NL: INTRODUCTIEHet werk van Tramaine de Senna getuigt van de intense relatie van de kunstenaar met materialen, maar ook met de “migratie van vormen” tussen verschillende populaire of materiële culturen, met overdaad, maar ook met het symbolische geweld en de ‘hauntologie’ van verschillende geschiedenissen, zowel transculturele als persoonlijke. Het werk van de Senna, voornamelijk beeldhouwkunst, houdt esthetisch het midden tussen uitbundigheid en afstoting. Door zich verschillende vormen, oppervlaktekwaliteiten en paletten toe te eigenen, nemen deze werken een bezinnings positie in ten aanzien van het vermogen van de maatschappij om, in combinatie met haar kannibalisme van symbolen en menselijke subjectiviteiten, een prozaïsche popcultuur te produceren.
Voor haar solotentoonstelling in het M HKA, getiteld MASTERBLASTER, presenteert de Senna een reeks nieuwe werken naast een belangrijke selectie van bestaande sculpturen. Het geheel van deze verzameling van werken vormt een breder onderzoek naar de transitionele esthetiek en het zelfbeeld. De vormen waaruit de werken van de Senna zijn opgebouwd kunnen worden gezien als verzetsdaden tegen de hedendaagse eisen die worden gesteld met betrekking tot het op de voorgrond plaatsen van iemands biografie of relaties ten opzichte van de gangbare identiteitsvormen, ten voordele van iets veel dubbelzinniger. Tussen deze tentoongestelde werken vinden we uiteenlopende referenties naar de fluorescerende kleuren en patronen van de Amerikaanse popcultuur uit de jaren tachtig, de auto van de Vlaamse country-poppionier Bobbejaan Schoepen en overmaatse versies van kleurrijke visvliegen die oorspronkelijk door een familielid werden gemaakt. Onder de zoete tinten en texturen, schuilen meer onopgeloste, veranderlijke en niet-representatieve zaken.
EN: INTRODUCTIONTramaine de Senna’s work bears witness to the artist’s intense relationship with materials, but also to the “migration of forms” between different popular or material cultures, excess, and also the symbolic violence and ‘hauntology’ of histories, both trans-cultural and personal. Working primarily with sculpture, de Senna’s works float aesthetically between exuberance and repulsion. In appropriating different forms, surface qualities and palettes, these works adopt a position of reflection towards society’s ability to produce prosaic pop culture in conjunction with its cannibalism of symbols and human subjectivities.
For her solo exhibition at M HKA, titled MASTERBLASTER, de Senna presents a series of new works alongside a key selection of existing sculptures. Together, this constellation of works form a broader investigation of transitory aesthetics and selfhood. The forms that comprise de Senna’s works can be seen as acts of resistance to the contemporary demands for foregrounding one’s biography or one’s relations to established constituencies of identity, in favour of something much more ambiguous. Within these exhibited works, we find references as wide-ranging as the fluorescent colours and patterns of 1980s American pop, Flemish country-pop pioneer Bobbejaan Schoepen’s car, and oversized versions of colourful fishing flies originally made by a relative. Under the saccharin hues and textures, lye things unresolved, mutable and non-representational.

Sur le plan esthétique, les œuvres de de Senna - principalement des sculptures - flottent entre exubérance et répulsion. En s'appropriant différentes formes, qualités de surface et palettes, les œuvres adoptent une position réflexive sur la capacité de la société à produire une culture pop prosaïque conjonction à son cannibalisme des symboles et des subjectivités humaines.
Pour son exposition personnelle au M HKA, intitulée MASTERBLASTER, de Senna présente une série de nouvelles œuvres ainsi qu’une sélection de sculptures existantes. Ensemble, cette constellation d'œuvres forme une recherche plus étendue de l'esthétique transitionnelle et de l'individualité. Les formes qui composent les œuvres de de Senna peuvent être considérées comme des actes de résistance aux exigences contemporaines de mise en avant de sa biographie ou de ses relations à des constructions identitaires établis, en faveur de quelque chose de bien plus ambigu. Parmi ces œuvres exposées, on trouve diverses références aux couleurs et aux motifs fluorescents de la pop américaine des années 80, à la voiture du pionnier de la country-pop flamande Bobbejaan Schoepen, et à des versions surdimensionnées de mouches de pêche colorées fabriquées à l'origine par un membre de la famille. Sous les teintes et les textures de la saccharine résident des choses plus irrésolues, fluctuantes et non représentatives.
