*The walled garden = paradise; the garden is a place of nature, and walls are a place of culture. A walled garden is a place of nature encapsulated in a manageable manner by the walls of culture. That's what your backyard is: it's a yard, it's nature, it has walls. The walls are culture. You can think of the walls as physical entities: your lawn has borders if you don't have a fence. Your neighbors know where the borders are. The borders exist in the imagination of your neighbor. The idea of a walled-off space in a communal society is a social agreement. You have your domain: your house, your garden/your backyard. That's enough cosmos for you to set right. And perhaps if you're competent enough to do more, you'll expand your garden so that you have more to tend. But you start with a walled garden of some size, and if you tend it properly, the promise is that as your competence grows, so will your dominion. "Man" is sent to tend the garden and to name everything that's in it. This is the λόγος/Logos: re-representation of the creative spirit of God that makes itself manifest when time begins and when new things come into being. Our ability to name, our ability to speak is that in the microcosmic manner. That's what we're capable of doing.

Tramaine de Senna presenteert met Luckx Interior een ruimte waar ze popbeelden, natuurlijke elementen en menselijke figuren laat dansen met haar fundamentele grip op kunstgeschiedenis, architectuur, filosofie en de modewereld. Stoffen, keramiek en tekeningen bouwen een feest te midden van gedachten die sprankelend tot leven komen via glanzende glazuren, dierenprints en felle kleuren. De Senna tast visuele theorieën af en zet bewust gangbare normen en patronen in als gids om veranderlijke vormen en de constructie van culturele verschijningen te ontrafelen. Geen appropriatie, maar een duik in de oorsprong van objecten die ze verbindt aan de accumulatie van tijd en de enorme verscheidenheid aan menselijke creaties.

Met luciferdoosjes, magazines, platenhoezen, filmsets, catwalks, industriële omgevingen en antropocentrische vragen als uitgangspunten, legt de Senna op een geheel eigen manier laagjes culturele geschiedenis in haar werk. Ze kijkt naar onze menselijke erfenis via een groothoeklens die tijdsgebonden grenzen overstijgt, terwijl ze erkent dat alle door ons verkozen trends en standaarden het resultaat zijn van wat er eerder was. Of beter gezegd: ze beschouwt de opeenstapeling van alle eerdere beelden, ruimtes en concepten als een soepel continuüm waarin verleden en heden samenvloeien. “Ook al is het lang geleden, het bestaat allemaal nu, zij het in een andere vorm”, zegt ze. Zo doen benen in contrapposto al snel denken aan klassieke sculpturen, terwijl feeërieke paddenstoelen een gevoel voor humor het werk binnenloodsen en de bottines rond de voeten de pose van het beeld verbinden met vandaag. In haar werk is de afstand tussen tijdsperiodes opgeheven. Alsof je het element tijd van geschiedenis zou wrijven. Geleid door de grenzen van de materie verbindt de Senna heterogene invalshoeken en voorstellingen uit verschillende tijdperken en culturen, met een gevoeligheid voor hoe onze stedelijke habitats worden ingericht, ervaren en geleefd.

De gedegen theoretische en filosofische kennis van de kunstenaar zet haar meervoudige en allesomvattende denken op scherp. De verbanden die de Senna legt worden er glashelder van. Zo ziet ze hoe het modernisme decoratie van zich heeft afgeschud en in haar rebellie daartegen verwijst ze naar kunstcriticus Boris Groys. Volgens hem komt het wantrouwen van mensen jegens het oppervlak voort uit angst voor manipulatie: “daarom proberen ze het oppervlak van het object te vernietigen, de barst te vinden. Het is een strategie van het modernisme.” Wanneer ze het heeft over haar eigen affiniteit met weelderige kleuren, levendige beelden en ‘vrouwelijke’ materialen (of toch wat in onze cultuur vaak als vrouwelijk gezien wordt), vermeldt de Senna dat ze een terughoudendheid voelt tegenover de hygiëne van het gestroomlijnde modernisme. Vanaf de jaren dertig begon alles er strakker en egaler uit te zien. De architectuur werd gladder; als je de oppervlakken maar makkelijk kon afvegen.

Naast de neiging om onze omgeving terug te bekleden met een zekere uitbundigheid, is de Senna geïnteresseerd in hoe esthetische stromingen binnen design en architectuur zich een weg weten te banen in andere aspecten van de samenleving. Neem de puntige bh’s van Jean Paul Gaultier die menig kledingkast verlieten van zodra strakkere lijnen dominanter werden, of het komen en gaan van luxueus ogende auto-interieurs uit de jaren vijftig. Bepaalde kleurenpaletten worden eerst tot leven gebracht op paradepaden en vinden we even later terug in onze keukens. Op een gelijkaardige manier is de kunstenaar gefascineerd door wat mensen allemaal uitvinden; van het construeren van bruggen en het internet tot de evolutie van kleuren en materialen. De Senna reflecteert daarbij op de rol van ieder individu in het enorme netwerk van menselijke kennis en ervaring. Als een waterval vloeien ideeën en inzichten van generatie op generatie over, waarbij ruimte wordt toegewezen en onze ervaring met waar we wonen vorm krijgt. Hoeveel mensen waren er nodig om onze huidige wereld te bouwen?

Telkens wanneer de Senna het Albertkanaal in Deurne voorbij fietst, valt het haar op hoe bruisend de infrastructuur van scheepvaart, logistiek en handel eruit ziet. De LEGO-achtige tinten met primaire kleuren en neon in rood, kobaltblauw, ultramarijn, geel, groen, oranje en grijs – roze en magenta worden duidelijk vermeden – doen denken aan mannetjesvogels die hun viriliteit etaleren en om aandacht strijden met hun kleurrijke veren als inzet. Er is hier sprake van een ‘mannelijke’ glans die op zijn beurt uitbundig is en waarvan de schoonheid volgens de kunstenaar vreemd genoeg over het hoofd wordt gezien. Ze noemt het “the seen unseen”. Hoe komt het dat dit soort praal onzichtbaar blijft? Waarom onderhouden we een discrepantie tussen het weelderige van wat als mannelijk beschouwd wordt en de veronderstelde esthetische voorkeuren van vrouwen? “Het is vreemd om aan [de] uitbundigheid [van dit mannenlandschap] te denken en dan naar een ‘vrouwelijke esthetiek’ van westerse vrouwen en mijn werken te kijken. Waarom [wordt het anders geïnterpreteerd]?” Het is een vraag die uitnodigt om de complexe wisselwerking tussen cultuur, identiteit en expressie van naderbij te bekijken. Het is een vraag die de kijker begeleidt terwijl hij meedanst tussen de Senna’s luxueuze beeldtaal.

With Luckx Interior, Tramaine de Senna presents a space where pop imagery, nature, and the human form are dancing with the artist’s profound understanding of art history, architecture, philosophy, and fashion. Fabrics, ceramics, and drawings are having a blast in a vibrant celebration of ideas, adorned with sparkling embellishments, shiny glazes, animal prints, and bold colours. In her exploration of visual theory, de Senna deliberately contrasts prevailing norms and patterns, seeking to unravel the migration of forms and the construction of cultural appearances. Unlike mere appropriation, her work delves into the origins of objects, connecting them with the accumulation of the times and the vast array of human creation.

Drawing inspiration from matchbooks, magazines, LP-covers, movie sets, the runway, industrial environments, and anthropocentric questions, de Senna has a unique way of layering cultural history into her works. She looks at our human legacy through a wide-angle lens that transcends temporal boundaries, and recognises that the trends and standards we’ve elected today are all products of what came before. Or, rather, she regards the buildup of all prior visuals, spaces, and concepts as a fluid continuum where past and present coalesce. ‘Even though it has been a long time ago, it all exists now, albeit in different forms’, she says. That’s how contrapposto legs easily remind of classical sculptures, while whimsical mushrooms bring in a sense of humour, and the boots on their feet tie the sculpture’s pose to our contemporary days. Within her work, the distance between timeframes has been removed. Think of it as history without the element of time. De Senna connects disparate viewpoints, images, and ideas across different eras and cultures, guided by the boundaries of matter, while upholding a sensitivity for how our urban habitats are decorated, experienced, and lived in.

The artist’s thorough insight of theory and philosophy sharpens her multiple, all-encompassing thinking, making the connections she draws crystal clear. In her rebellion against modernism’s shedding of decoration, she refers to art critic Boris Groys, who sees that people’s distrust of the surface lies in their fear of manipulation; ‘therefore, they seek to destroy the surface of the object, find the crack. This is a strategy of modernism.’ Talking about her own personal affinity with colours of plenty, vivid imagery, and “feminine” materials (or what is culturally regarded as such), de Senna mentions feeling a certain restraint against the hygiene of streamlined modernism. From the 1930s on, everything started to look more clean and alike. Architecture became more sleek, allowing for surfaces to be easier to wipe.

Besides the urge to bring back a sense of exuberance to our spaces, de Senna is, at the same time, interested in how movements within the aesthetics of design and architecture have the ability to spread widely throughout other aspects of society. Take Jean Paul Gaultier’s pointy bras leaving wardrobes alongside the emergence of cleaner lines, or the coming and going of luxurious-looking interiors of fifties cars. Certain colour palettes are first brought alive on runways, only to be later found in our kitchens. Along these lines, the artist is fascinated with the sheer ingenuity of humanity. From engineering bridges and the internet, to the evolution of shades and materiality, de Senna reflects on every individual’s role in the vast network of human knowledge and experience. Like a cascading waterfall, ideas and insights flow from generation to generation, shaping the delegation of space and our experience with where we live. How many people did it take to build our current world?

Whenever de Senna passes by the Albert Canal in Deurne, she can't help but notice the bustling infrastructure of shipping, logistics, and trade. The LEGO-like colours run from primary hues to neon shades in reds, cobalt blues, ultramarine, yellows, greens, oranges, greys, clearly avoiding pinks and magentas. Similarly, in nature, male birds signal their health and vitality through colourful plumage, vying for attention. It’s a “manly” exhilaration, exuberant in its own way; the beauty of which is weirdly overlooked, according to the artist. She calls it the seen unseen. Why is it that this type of exuberance remains invisible? Why is there a certain disparity between the zest of what’s considered manly, and the perceived aesthetic preferences of women? ‘It's strange to think of [the] exuberance [of this manscape], and then look at certain “female aesthetics” among Western women and some of my works. Why [is it perceived differently]?’ It's a question that invites exploration into the complex interplay between culture, identity, and expression. It’s a question that guides the viewer as they waltz along de Senna’s luxurious visual language.
