Stel je nachtlampjes voor die een warm licht uitstralen in een luxueuze slaapkamer. Illusionistische patronen op neon-kleurig behang. Slecht verlichte tikkende radiatoren. Elk roept een aparte atmosfeer op.

Het woord 'atmosfeer' wordt al lang gebruikt om “stemmingen in de lucht, de emotionele geladenheid van een ruimte” te beschrijven, zoals Gernot Böhme ooit schreef. De Duitse filosoof maakte inzichtelijke analyses van wat atmosferen zijn en hoe ze ontstaan. Atmosferen zijn volgens hem ongrijpbare totaliteiten; ze overkoepelen en doordringen alles. Ze communiceren een gevoel door “een diversiteit aan indrukken” te verenigen. Deze indrukken kunnen van bepaalde lichten, geluiden, objecten zijn. Waar het bij deze zintuiglijke dingen om gaat, is niet alleen hun concrete productie, maar "wat ze uitstralen naar buiten, de ruimte in". Waar het om gaat is "het verbeeldingsrijke idee dat door het object in de waarnemer opkomt". Want ten slotte zijn atmosferen niets zonder het bewuste subject. Ze kunnen voortkomen uit (een constellatie van) objecten, maar ze moeten worden ervaren om te kunnen bestaan. Nadenken over atmosferen betekent dus nadenken over ruimte, object en persoon.

Het is dit denken dat de praktijken van Tramaine de Senna, Che Go Eun en Manon van den Eeden bindt. Alle drie kijken ze met volgehouden aandacht naar hun omgeving. Ze streven ernaar het immateriële te materialiseren: vluchtige momenten waarin dingen zich opstapelen. Hun sculpturale objecten zijn geladen met meerdere herinneringen, emoties, sensaties; met referenties, geschiedenissen en betekenissen. Tegelijkertijd condenseren ze atmosferen en roepen ze ze op. De bezoeker moet zich tot de werken verhouden, moet aanwezig zijn in hun fysieke en/of mentale ruimte, zodat ze zich kunnen ontvouwen.

Hoewel de werken verschillen in hun formalisme - van minimalistisch tot maximalistisch - delen de materialen een verleidelijke kwaliteit. Glinsterende pailletten, reflecterende spiegels, glanzende oppervlakken - de werken die in deze tentoonstelling worden gepresenteerd, lokken de bezoeker naar binnen. Bovendien zijn het getuigen van het alledaagse - borden, vazen, huiselijke interieurs - maar op een open manier. Elk kunstwerk is de belichaming van een intens proces van beslissingen om talloze interpretaties mogelijk te maken.

In haar praktijk speelt Manon van den Eeden met deze dubbelzinnigheid tussen vorm en functie; tussen nep, echt en hyperreëel. Haar werken ademen een Unheimlichkeit uit: netjes afgewerkte, herkenbare objecten worden onbekend, onbetrouwbaar zelfs, doordat ze worden uitvergroot, vermenigvuldigd, samengevoegd, gemanipuleerd. Hierbij combineert ze meestal handarbeid en digitale technologieën. Dat is ook het geval bij de tentoongestelde sculpturale vloerinstallatie. Deze wordt gekenmerkt door een luchtige willekeur, net als die van een speelse tol, maar gepaard met een gespannen strengheid. Door de beweging van de objecten worden bezoekers zich ook bewust van hun bewegingen in de ruimte. Bovendien zorgen ze voor een soundtrack voor de tentoonstelling - maar is die ritmisch of claustrofobisch? Gevangen tussen draaien en vallen, in een schijnbaar eindeloze tussentoestand, vraag je je af: wat houdt dit evenwicht eigenlijk in? Welk universum vertegenwoordigen deze borden?

De combinatie van analoge en digitale technieken zit ook in het werk van Che Go Eun. Ze is opgeleid in traditionele Koreaanse schilderkunst en werkt nu voornamelijk met digitale beelden op verschillende manieren, waaronder printen, 3D-rendering en XR. Verwijzingen naar kunstgeschiedenis, religieuze iconografie en cybercultuur worden gelaagd in haar eigenzinnige beeldtaal. Waar haar eerdere werken hedendaagse kwesties als gender, sociale constructies, geweld en ethiek behandelden, waren deze werken vanaf het begin persoonlijker. Ze liet een AI-applicatie beelden genereren op basis van zinnen uit haar dagboek of hoe ze zich voelde. Deze afbeeldingen combineerde en bewerkte ze vervolgens om ze opnieuw te maken als waterverftekeningen op doorschijnend papier. Dit was een belangrijke stap: het handgemaakte introduceert een dieper gevoel van iets menselijks, voorbij de vlakheid van het digitale. Deze tekeningen vertaalde ze vervolgens weer naar digitale collages voor behangpapier. Het gebruik van behang is mede geïnspireerd door regisseur Park Chan-wook, die er vaak naar teruggrijpt als middel om de emotionele toestand van zijn personages uit te drukken. Door dit behang te installeren in relatie tot bijpassende uitgesneden spiegels in de galerij, creëerde Che Go Eun vergelijkbare verhalende, meeslepende ruimtes, elk met een contrasterende sfeer. Ze dienen als intieme uitnodigingen om na te denken en te praten over mentale processen. Wat herken je in de patronen? Word je melancholisch van de paarse tinten? Waar word je aan herinnerd? Waar dwaal je naar toe? Kun je het opbrengen om te blijven en in de spiegel te kijken?

Wat dingen lijken te zijn, wat ze werkelijk zijn en wat ze betekenen is niet noodzakelijk hetzelfde - en dat is precies wat Tramaine de Senna onder de loep neemt. In haar werk gaan het visuele en het conceptuele altijd hand in hand. Ze is geïnteresseerd in wat ze 'de migratie van vormen' noemt, de manieren waarop beelden, thema's en design zich verspreiden - bijvoorbeeld hoe nucleair geweld uiteindelijk zijn weg vond in de verbeelding van Godzilla, of hoe Streamline Modernisme het ontwerp van huishoudelijke apparaten beïnvloedde. Ze vermengt vaak complexe geschiedenissen, persoonlijke herinneringen, terugkerende motieven in materiële cultuur en referenties aan popcultuur. Daarbij speelt ze met kleurenpaletten - hetzij bubblegum nillies hetzij Technicolor - en met materialen - hun texturen en tactiliteit, hun oppervlakken en afmetingen. Er zit een uitbundigheid in haar werken die een intens creatieproces verraadt. Werk maken is voor haar een viscerale ervaring; het is dingen uitzoeken al doende, een vaardigheid verwerven en dan alle regels en parameters ombuigen. Het is een aaneenschakeling van pogingen, benaderingen. De werken in de tentoonstelling sluiten hier bij aan. Ze maakte niet alleen een gewatteerd muurstuk, waarbij ze eerdere tekeningen in textielvorm vertaalde, ze maakte ook 3 keramische objecten. De vaas roept op zich al verschillende associaties op - kunsthistorisch verwijst hij bijvoorbeeld naar het stilleven en als vat om iets in te dragen doet hij denken aan het menselijk lichaam. De Senna voegde er echter nog veel meer aan toe - onder andere dat zeevruchten ook vaak voorkomen in nature morte-schilderijen en dat de Senna als kind een korte broek droeg met een print van noedels. Al haar werken getuigen dus van haar brede onderzoek, waarbij hun vorm een belichaming is van al deze verhalen.

Dat geldt voor het werk van de drie kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling: ze bevatten letterlijk en figuurlijk alle concepten, beelden en technologieën die in de loop van de tijd zijn ontstaan, alle werelden waarin ze leven, alle sferen waarover ze spreken.

Imagine bedside lamps oozing a warm light in a plush bedroom. Illusionistic patterns on neon coloured wallpaper. Dimly lit ticking radiators. Each triggers a distinct atmosphere. 

The word ‘atmosphere’ has long been used to describe “moods in the air, the emotional tinge of a space”, as Gernot Böhme once wrote. The German philosopher has provided insightful analyses of what atmospheres are and how they come about. According to him, atmospheres are intangible totalities; they imbue everything. They communicate a feeling, by unifying “a diversity of impressions”. These impressions could be of certain lights, sounds, objects. What matters with these sensory things is not just their concrete production, but “the way in which they radiate outwards into space”. What matters is “the imaginative idea the observer receives through the object”. For finally, atmospheres are nothing without the sentient subject. They might emanate from (a constellation of) objects, but they need to be experienced in order to exist.Thinking about atmospheres hence means thinking about space, object and subject. 

It is this thinking that binds the practices of Tramaine de Senna, Che Go Eun and Manon van den Eeden. All three of them look at their surroundings with sustained attention. They aim to materialize the immaterial: fleeting moments in which things accumulate. Their sculptural objects are charged with multiple memories, emotions, sensations; with references, histories and meanings. They are hence simultaneously condensations and evocations of atmospheres. The visitor has to engage with them, has to be present in the physical and/or mental space, in order for them to open up. 

Although the works are different in their formalism - from the minimalist to the maximalist - the materials share a seducing quality. Shimmering sequins, reflecting mirrors, glossy surfaces - the works presented in this exhibition lure the visitor in. Moreover, these works bear witness to the everyday - plates, vases, domestic interiors - but in an open-ended way. Every artwork is the embodiment of an intense process of decision-making to allow for numerous readings. 

In her practice, Manon van den Eeden especially plays with this ambiguity between form and function, between fake, real and hyperreal. An Unheimlichkeit permeates her works: neatly finished, recognizable objects are rendered unfamiliar, unreliable even, because they are magnified, multiplied, merged, manipulated. Hereby she usually combines manual labour and digital technologies. This is also the case in the sculptural floor installation on display. The lighthearted randomness, much like that of a playful spinning top, is paired with a tense strictness. The movement of the works consequently prompts visitors to become aware of their movements in space as well. Moreover, they provide a score for the exhibition - but is it rhythmical or claustrophobic? Trapped between rotating and falling, in a seemingly endless in-between state, one wonders: what does this equilibrium really entail? What universe do these plates represent? 

The combination of analogue and digital technologies also characterises the work of Che Go Eun. Trained in traditional Korean painting, she now mainly works with digital imagery in various ways, including printing, 3D rendering and XR. However, references to art history, religious iconography and cyberculture are layered in her idiosyncratic visual language. Whereas her previous works have dealt with contemporary issues such as gender, social constructs, violence and ethics, these works were more personal from the outset. She had an AI application generate images based on sentences from her diary or how she was feeling. These images she then combined and edited, only to remake them as watercolour drawings on translucent paper. This was an important step: the handmade introduces a deeper feeling of something human, beyond the flatness of the digital. These drawings were then translated again into digital wallpaper collages. The use of wallpapers was partly inspired by director Park Chan-wook, who often uses them as a means to express the emotional state of his characters. By installing these wallpapers in relation to matching cut-out shaped mirrors in the gallery, Che Go Eun created similar narrative, immersive spaces, each with a contrasting atmosphere. They serve as intimate invitations to reflect on and talk about mental processes. What can you discern in the patterns? Do the purple hues make you melancholic? What are you reminded of? Where are you drifting off to? Can you muster to stay and look in the mirror? 

What things appear to be, what they are and what they mean is not necessarily the same - and it is precisely this that Tramaine de Senna scrutinizes. In her work, the visual and the conceptual are intertwined. She is interested in what she calls “the migration of forms”, the ways in which imagery, themes, design disseminate - for example how nuclear violence eventually found its way in the imagining of Godzilla, or how Streamline Modernism influenced the design of domestic appliances. She often mixes complex histories, personal memories, recurring motifs in material culture, and pop cultural references. Thereby she plays with colour palettes - be they bubblegum nillies or Technicolour - and with materials - their textures and tactility, their surfaces and sizes. There is an exuberance in her works that speaks of an intense creation process. Making work is a visceral experience for her; it is figuring things out whilst doing them, acquiring a skill and then bending all its rules and parameters. It is a concatenation of attempts, approximations. The works in the exhibition are very much in line with this. Not only did she make a quilted wall piece, translating earlier drawings in textile form, she also made 3 ceramic objects. The vessels carry within them already various associations - for instance art historically they reference the still life and as a container to carry something, they remind of the human body. However, de Senna added many more - amongst others that seafood also was commonly featured in nature morte paintings, and that as a child, de Senna wore a pair of shorts with a noodle print. All her works hence attest to her wide ranging research topics, their form being an embodiment of all these stories.

So it goes for the works of the three artists in this exhibition: they literally and figuratively contain all the concepts, images and technologies that accrued over time, all the worlds they inhabit, all the atmospheres they speak of.
