Het is geen toeval dat kunstenaar Alice Vanderschoot de naam van een spel kiest als titel voor de tentoonstelling die ze samenstelt. Haar fascinatie voor speelkaarten herbergt een wijsheid die de filosoof Heraclitus al in 500 v.C. verkondigde: de mens komt het dichtst bij zichzelf wanneer hij de ernst van een spelend kind bereikt. Carl Jung beschrijft dat iets nieuws creëren niet gebeurt door het intellect maar door het instinct om te spelen en Henri Matisse weet dat hij de liefde voor het spel met alle kunstenaars deelt. Vanderschoot kent de spelregels en ontvouwt als teamspeler een frisse wereld van multidisciplinaire beeldensprokkelaars.
Kunstenaars als Hilde Overbergh, Eva Dinneweth, Kasper De Vos, Peter Lagast en Leen Vandorpe spelen met verzamelen. Ze gebruiken letterlijk objects trouvés of gevonden voorwerpen die ze zich toe-eigenen en re-contextualiseren om hun verhaal te vertellen. Bij Overbergh is het verzamelen van materiaal een bijna meditatief proces, even belangrijk als het verwerken en later heropbouwen in dialoog met de nieuwe context. Lagast schept aan de hand van platenhoezen werelden vol humor en kunsthistorische referenties. Vandorpe stelt door het hertekenen van details en knipsels de gangbare orde opnieuw samen en Dinneweth filmt hoe verschillende samenstellingen een beeld steeds doen verschijnen en verdwijnen. De Vos integreert bestaande en heruitgevonden objecten in zijn monumentale installaties die fungeren als marktkraam, schrijn en theater. Door de materiële realiteit te bewerken en heruit te vinden scheppen ze nieuwe symbolen voor de hedendaagse wereld.
Voor Gilles Dedecker, William Ludwig Lutgens, Esther Cornelis en Thomas Renwart is het spel overweldigend. Ze modelleren hun dagelijkse indrukken en impressies tot persoonlijke storytelling. De tekeningen, houtsneden en prenten van Dedecker ontstaan uit vrije associatie op basis van prikkels. De ‘gevonden’ titel roept beelden op in een poging de chaos te structureren en bedwingen. Lutgens satire bundelt de constante stroom aan informatie, van nieuwsfragmenten tot flarden van gesprekken, en versmelt feit en fictie tot rake reflecties over het groteske menselijk gedrag en de sociale en politieke realiteit. De portretten van Cornelis tonen de mensen die haar omringen kleurrijk, gedeconstrueerd en hard. Ze zoekt schoonheid in de lelijkheid en geeft zo een glimp van de innerlijke wereld. Renwart schopt met zijn geweven gedichten de traditie van wandtapijten de toekomst in. Met de traagheid eigen aan handwerk kleurt hij tragikomisch intieme herinneringen en zowel persoonlijke als literaire en populaire (song)teksten tot een houvast en rustpunt in de soms verpletterende realiteit. Tramaine de Senna, Hans Demeulenaere en Juan Pablo Plazas vinden vormen in alles en spelen met de migratie ervan. De bijzonder rijke vormentaal van de Senna bevat popcultuur, heden, verleden en transculturele en persoonlijke invloeden. Haar uitbundige werk herbergt de hele wereld. Een veelzijdig spel met verschillende technieken en trompe-l’oeil benadrukt het belang van vorm: hoe we ons presenteren. Plazas is als kunstenaar en antropoloog gefascineerd door dat vermogen van mensen en gemeenschappen om de wereld op verschillende manieren te interpreteren. Met verbazing en gevoel voor humor haalt hij gekende vormen, hier een tafel en overlappende cirkels, uit hun context en presenteert ze als veranderlijk, levend object. Demeulenaere voegt een stoel toe gebaseerd op hetzelfde wiskundig Venndiagram. Samen spelen, dialoog, is voor hem essentieel. De vorm verliest nooit het grotere geheel en staat in de wereld verbonden met het design en architecturaal collectief geheugen.
Els Lesage, Natasja Mabesoone en Ellen Pil zijn gedreven door het technische spel. Door zelf-referentieel onderzoek ontstaan sferen met een boodschap die de techniek overstijgen. Lesage hergebruikt en herhaalt beelden van oud behangpapier niet voor de esthetische of monetaire waarde ervan maar voor het gevoel dat ze oproepen. Als nabeelden vloeien patronen in elkaar over, even ongrijpbaar en vergankelijk als het beleven van onze herinneringen. Mabesoone gebruikt printtechnieken zoals zachte vernisgravure om beelden gelaagd te verenigen in een pastelgekleurde, metaforische, poëtische en geestige wereld van culturele associaties en verbeelding. Met grafische kennis onderzoekt Pil de relatie van de mens met het analoge en digitale in tijden van automatisering en massaproductie. Machinale en ambachtelijke uitstraling zijn niet meer te onderscheiden in deze wereld waar de machine doldraait en penselen op knoppen drukken, waar alles technisch mogelijk lijkt maar we toch zo ontoereikend blijken. Met bizarre verhalen en hilarische anekdotes gaan we dapper door want de mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos.
Als kunstenaar curator kiest Vanderschoot intuïtief collega’s die haar fascinatie voor referenties en verloren symbolisme delen. ‘Ik hou ervan om kunstenaars op bezoek te hebben in mijn atelier, het is een punt waarop alles even stilstaat midden in het werkproces’. Kunstenaars ontmoeten elkaar en wisselen overeenkomsten in vorm, kleur, humor en materiaal uit. Er worden nieuwe linken gelegd en visuele verwantschappen ontstaan. Ze scherpen elkaars werkwijze, proces en techniek. Robert Barry stelt: ‘Ik vertrouw vooral op andere kunstenaars, die volgens mij slimmer zijn dan critici of curatoren of wie dan ook. They really know’. Kasper De Vos zegt: ‘omdat je als kunstenaar constant bezig bent je omgeving vorm te geven, wordt je atelier een soort spirituele speelplaats of droomfabriek’. De Poortersloge was voorheen een uitkijktoren waar de Brugse elite het in-en uitvaren van de handelsschepen bewaakte. Vandaag zijn het kunstenaars die er over de wereld uitkijken terwijl Vanderschoot de kaarten schudt op de spirituele speelplaats. -- Femke Vandenbosch

It is no coincidence that artist Alice Vanderschoot chooses the name of a game as the title for the exhibition she is curating. Her fascination with playing cards harbors a wisdom that the philosopher Heraclitus had learned as early as 500 BC. proclaimed: Man comes closest to himself when he reaches the seriousness of a child at play. Carl Jung describes that creating something new does not happen through the intellect but through the instinct to play and Henri Matisse knows that he shares the love of play with all artists. Vanderschoot knows the rules of the game and, as a team player, unfolds a fresh world of multidisciplinary image collectors.
Artists such as Hilde Overbergh, Eva Dinneweth, Kasper De Vos, Peter Lagast and Leen Vandorpe play with collecting. They literally use objects trouvés or found objects that they appropriate and re-contextualize to tell their story. At Overbergh, collecting material is an almost meditative process, just as important as processing it and rebuilding it later in dialogue with the new context. Using record sleeves, Lagast creates worlds full of humor and art-historical references. Vandorpe reconstructs the usual order by redrawing details and clippings, and Dinneweth films how different compositions make an image appear and disappear. De Vos integrates existing and reinvented objects in his monumental installations that function as a market stall, shrine and theatre. By reworking and reinventing material reality, they create new symbols for the contemporary world.
For Gilles Dedecker, William Ludwig Lutgens, Esther Cornelis and Thomas Renwart, the game is overwhelming. They model their daily impressions and impressions into personal storytelling. Dedecker's drawings, woodcuts and prints arise from free association based on stimuli. The 'found' title evokes images in an attempt to structure and control the chaos. Lutgen's satire bundles the constant stream of information, from news fragments to fragments of conversations, and fuses fact and fiction into striking reflections on grotesque human behavior and social and political reality. Tramaine de Senna, Hans Demeulenaere and Juan Pablo Plazas find form in everything and play with its migration. The particularly rich design language of the Senna contains pop culture, present, past and transcultural and personal influences. Her exuberant work is home to the whole world. A versatile play with different techniques and trompe-l'oeil emphasizes the importance of form: how we present ourselves. As an artist and anthropologist, Plazas is fascinated by the ability of people and communities to interpret the world in different ways. With amazement and a sense of humor he takes known shapes, here a table and overlapping circles, out of context and presents them as a changeable, living object. Demeulenaere adds a chair based on the same mathematical Venn diagram. Playing together, dialogue, is essential for him. The form never loses the bigger picture and is connected in the world with the design and architectural collective memory.
Els Lesage, Natasja Mabesoone and Ellen Pil are driven by the technical game. Self-referential research creates atmospheres with a message that transcend technology. Lesage reuses and repeats images of old wallpaper not for their aesthetic or monetary value but for the feeling they evoke. If afterimages patterns flow into each other, as elusive and transient as the experience of our memories. Mabesoone uses printing techniques such as soft varnish engraving to layer images together in a pastel-coloured, metaphorical, poetic and witty world of cultural associations and imagination. With graphical knowledge, Pil explores the relationship of humans with the analog and digital in times of automation and mass production. Machine and craft look are indistinguishable in this world where the machine goes crazy and brushes push buttons, where everything seems technically possible but we turn out to be so inadequate. With bizarre stories and hilarious anecdotes we bravely continue because the possibilities are endless.
As an artist curator, Vanderschoot intuitively selects colleagues who share her fascination with references and lost symbolism. ‘I love visiting artists in my studio, it is a point where everything comes to a standstill in the middle of the work process'. Artists meet and exchange similarities in form, colour, humor and material. New links are made and visual relationships are created. They sharpen each other's working method, process and technique. Robert Barry states: “I mostly rely on other artists, who I think are smarter than critics or curators or anyone else. They really know'. Kasper De Vos says: 'because as an artist you are constantly busy shaping your environment, your studio becomes a kind of spiritual playground or dream factory'. The Poortersloge used to be a watchtower where the Bruges elite guarded the entry and exit of the merchant ships. Today it is artists who look out over the world while Vanderschoot shuffles the cards on the spiritual playground. -- Femke Vandenbosch
